Any poets out there?

7/13/2016

I hope everyone is enjoying the summer holidays! They go by way too fast!

We are currently working hard to get Lighted Lanterns Level C ready for printing.
We are also working hard to get a book entitled Writing Purposes published. Geared for grades 5-8 (but not limited to those grades), this book will explain how to do various sorts of writing, from outlines, to reports, to essays, to news stories and more. It will begin with perfecting sentences then move on to ideal paragraphs and carry on from there. There will also be an appendix with sections devoted to Descriptive Writing, Literary Analysis, and more.
In this comprehensive book, I am hoping to have a poetry section as well. Are there any students out there who have written poems and would like to submit them for the possibility of being published in our Writing Purposes? I'm looking for poems written by students from Grade 5 on up. They can be rhyming poems, haikus, cinquains, diamantes, free verse, etc.

In your submission, please include name, age, email (of student or parent), type of poem, and the poem itself, of course. :)

Please send submissions to: [email protected]

Thank you!

Summer Break & Update

6/10/2016

Summer break is upon us and with that, the busy-ness of large family life, which just seems to be even more intense for some of us. We are still going to be trying to complete Lighted Lanterns Level C before the new school year. Also, we are thinking of publishing a Catholic Copywork book with enough selections that can be used for Grades 5-8. Included will be ideas on how to carry out Language Arts lessons the Natural Method way. If anyone has any ideas on how such a book might be the most beneficial, please do advise! We welcome all suggestions.

Another point of interest is that we think it will be a good idea to shut down the download page. It is costing us more to pay to have the downloads available than is worth it.

We hope you all have a wonderful summer!

A New Year and a Level C Update

Here at Cascia Books, we are planning for the new year and adjusting accordingly.
So much has been going on in our lives currently that we ended up slowing down on our Level C of Lighted Lanterns.  We initially had hoped to have it completed last summer.
It quickly became apparent that it would take longer than previous levels as the content deepens.  Add to that the addition of new babies to both our families and progress came to a screeching halt.  We are giving ourselves a more generous timeline and are hoping to have it complete and ready for print this summer.  We will keep you posted as we get closer to completion.
Thank you for your patience and encouragement!

Congratulations to Jennifer - you have been notified by email. Thank you to all who entered!

--------------------------------------------------

It's hard to believe, but we are fast approaching that wonderful time of year in which we get to prepare our hearts for the coming of the Christ Child.
If you use Advent wreaths, now would be a great time to stock up on your purple and pink candles. In our experience, at least, some stores don't have them when we need them, so we've learned to prepare early.
We have published some new Advent Activities that are available as downloads only. They are a fun way to help your children get ready for Christ's coming. Click on the picture to check out what we have!

We have also a published a Christmas Storybook, lovingly compiled, arranged and formatted by a devoted young lady. It is full of stories and poems relating to Advent, Christmas and Epiphany. We are happy to say that there are THREE new Virtue Chronicles now available. Our apologies for the long wait, but we hope this will make up for it. Another young girl has joined the team, and hopefully it won't be so long before the next ones come out.

Also, we now have a page for Catholic Hymns with guitar chords. My children are just learning and we thought we'd put them out there in case anyone else might benefit from them.

And the final note is that we will be taking down all our Canadian Add to Cart buttons as well as changing downloads to US prices. I still do have some stock available, and if you email I can let you know what I have left. Also, for those in Alberta,  and who have funding for homeschooling available, I can do purchase orders. (I am unaware of other provinces that have homeschool funding, but if you do, this is for you as well.)

God Bless you and yours!

Well, unfortunately Level C is proving to take longer than we hoped. We apologize to those who have been waiting patiently for it to come out. It's looking like it might be
ready sometime in the Fall. God-willing.
We will both have newborns very soon, and all of us know how things tend get put on the back-burner when the new blessing arrives! But we are nevertheless trying as best we can to get it out as soon as possible.
If you don't have the book already, we recommend getting You Can Teach Your Child Successfully by Ruth Beechick. In it, she has 17 weeks worth of writing assignments for grades 4-8. If you are not familiar with the Natural Method (which is also very similar to the Charlotte Mason method), this will give you a great understanding of it!
Complete Catholic Planners
We now have more planners in stock. Due to a necessary change of printers, we no longer have tabs in them. We recommend purchasing some stick-on tabs that you can purchase at places like Staples. Also, there are now 37 weeks of Daily Lesson Planning pages, and 2 new lovely covers to choose from, as well as having the back covers designed instead of just plain white. If you have suggestions, please do share them with us! We'd love to hear what you have to say.

The download version has a total of 3 covers to choose from and the same amount of forms from the original.
And one last thing: we now have a master product page from which you can order products with ease - without having to click on each individual item's page. Just click on the Products tab along the top of the web site.

PS - Don't forget our summer special which is still on for a number of our products; it won't be on for much longer.

A Mission of JOY!

Surely I am not the only mother with children who have a tendency to think mostly of themselves, without regard for the feelings and happiness of those around them: most notably their siblings.

It finally hit me that it was time to be proactive in my endeavors to bring up saints.

What we need in our family is JOY! True JOY!

A JOY that will be brought about by putting:

Jesus First
Others Second
Yourself Last

So, just recently I started designating a specified time to send my little saints on to a Mission of JOY. I told them that everything they do is a secret - a secret between them and God. Something that will be added to their heavenly reward.

The first thing they need to do is decide on something that puts Jesus first. So, some choose a sacrifice, some might choose a chore, and some might say a prayer, such as an Act of Love for God.

Then, it's on to thinking about others, for the love of God. Again, they might offer a sacrifice, do a chore for their sibling, perhaps even go and give them a hug telling them something they appreciate about them. My five year old had been stumped until I told him he could simply choose someone and say a prayer (or prayers), such as three Hail Marys, in thanksgiving for that person or for the graces they need to become saints; something along those lines. Always thinking of the welfare of the other person.

Finally! It's time for something for themselves! Ah, but, little ones, if you really want to love yourselves in a holy way, it will be in a manner that leads you closer to God, such as making reparation for past sins committed. I don't know about you mamas, but I get a little negligent in seeing to it that they do something to help make up for their sins. Yet I believe it really is something we ought to be doing. And what better way than to make it part of their daily Mission of JOY?
I've found that the few minutes they are gone on their little missions are some of the nicest. Self is not a concern.

Just thought I'd share with you what we've been doing, and perhaps spur on a few ideas for your family in the endeavor of making saints.

God bless!

Learning Grammar Through Writing now available for Pre-Order!

7/2/2015

The time has come! It's only been two years or so in the making and waiting. Lots of issues getting it to where we needed, such as a broken flash drive on which all our editable files were saved...but, it is now available for Pre-Order. We expect to be shipping by mid-July. Take advantage of our Pre-Order Special, it won't last long!

From the Teacher's Introduction:
"Because certain aspects of English grammar and composition are difficult to master, it is unrealistic to rely on a system which requires students to learn individual rules through isolated exercises. English grammar should be taught in response to the need to use it effectively. It cannot be taught as a separate entity without continuous application.
THE BEST MEDIUM AVAILABLE FOR TEACHING GRAMMAR IS THE STUDENT'S OWN WRITING. The central idea of Learning Grammar Through Writing is to teach grammar to students by having them write compositions regularly and then correct their own work, at a level which they can reasonably be expected to achieve."

We have revised and expanded this book with the authors' permission. There is now an Appendix consisting of:
  • Punctuation at a Glance
  • All About Syllables
  • More Problem Words and Expressions
  • Various Concepts
  • Ways to Cure Writer's Block
If you are using the Lighted Lanterns program, you will definitely want to get one of these, as we use it as our grammar reference for assignments and students will be required to look things up in a grammar book frequently from Level C on up.

"If we wish to see any improvement in the state community or the family, the family must, in common with the Church, educate the children in Christianity. It is true that the hope of a better future is founded on a good, obedient youth." ~ St. John Vianney
